Title: Trails Director

Description:

The COGGS Trails Director is the main point of contact for all things trails within the COGGS organization. The position is the liaison between COGGS Board of Directors, the COGGS trail stewards and volunteer trail crews, the contracted professional trail builders, and our external partners such as the City of Duluth administration, Parks & Rec, land managers such as MN DNR, etc. 

This Position Requires:

  • Oversight of COGGS volunteer trail stewards and crews to ensure all projects align with pre-approved specifications for the trails, city approval, and environmental permitting

  • Oversight of winter grooming operations, volunteer management, equipment use and storage

  • Close cooperation with the COGGS Mapping Committee

  • Management of COGGS assets, including inventory, storage and maintenance/replacement of all machinery, snowmobiles, leaf-blowers, hand tools, etc.

Recurring Duties:

Develop, build and maintain all COGGS trails by 

  1. Developing new trail build plans with COGGS stakeholders

  2. Writing and managing trail agreements with the City of Duluth

  3. Writing, bidding and managing professional build contracts

  4. Following COGGS/IMBA sustainable trail guidelines

  5. Following City of Duluth requirements according to contract obligations

  6. Supporting the activities of trails stewards

  7. Maintaining tool inventory and storage

  8. Organizing major trail building events

  9. Coordination of crew and volunteer events

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience volunteering for COGGS trailwork, or serving as a trail steward

  2. Understanding, recognition, and the ability to navigate the complex array of organizations, stakeholders, regulations and opinions involved in trail development in the Twin Ports (including the public, COGGS membership, other outdoor recreational groups, The City of Duluth and Superior as well as other city and state organizations, IMBA, etc)

  3. Deep knowledge of the COGGS trail system

  4. Understanding of the City of Duluth park system and management practices

  5. Good written and verbal communication skills

  6. Comfort with public speaking

  7. Basic computer skills (and familiarity with Google products)

  8. A durable sense of humor and a healthy amount of patience
