Reports to: Board of Directors
Direct Reports: Vice Chair, Board of Directors. Primary Liaison to: Executive Director Term: Up to 3 years
Description:
The chairperson leads the Board of Directors and serves as the Executive Director’s primary point of contact, ensuring strong governance, sound board operations, and a productive partnership between the Board and staff. While the Executive Director serves as the primary face of COGGS for day-to-day operations and stakeholder engagement, the chairperson remains available to represent the organization on Board-level matters and to support the varied stakeholders and moving parts that allow the Duluth mountain bike community to succeed.
1. Serve as the Board’s primary point of contact and thought partner for the Executive Director, providing support, guidance, and regular check-ins. Partner with the Executive Director—who serves as the primary day-to-day point person—on relationships with relevant stakeholders, including:
a. City of Duluth and other Land Managers
b. IMBA
c. Other trail user groups
d. COGGS membership and Duluth bike community
e. Other community leaders, partners, and event directors
2. Serve as a secondary point of contact for incoming inquiries, media requests, and special meeting requests, coordinating with the Executive Director.
3. Oversee Board of Directors, ensuring that all board members have the resources needed to succeed. Have a sound knowledge of all club functions and be able to assist when necessary
4. Run monthly board and annual membership meeting
5. Work closely with the administrative committee (Vice Chair and Secretary) and the Executive Director to regularly delegate tasks to board and committee members
6. Lead the Board’s process for hiring, onboarding, supporting, and annually evaluating the Executive Director
7. Signatory responsibility on behalf of organization in financial documents and contracts
Desired Qualifications:
1. Previous experience volunteering for COGGS or another outdoor group
2. Understanding of the City of Duluth’s parks system and management practices 3. Good written and verbal communication skills
4. Comfort with public speaking
5. Basic computer skills (competence with MS Office and Google Docs) 6. A durable sense of humor and a healthy amount of patience
7. Experience or comfort partnering with and providing oversight to an Executive Director
