Welcome to the Sawtooth Stage Race!
The Sawtooth Stage Race is the evolution of two iconic North Shore events—the Split Rock Rock Splitter and the Sawtooth Challenge—combined into one unforgettable weekend. As the region’s only multi-day mountain bike trail race, it showcases three premier trail systems along Lake Superior’s North Shore, offering riders a true test of endurance, skill, and versatility.
Stage One: Pincushion Mountain Trails – Grand Marais
The race begins in Grand Marais with Stage One at the recently updated Pincushion Mountain Trails. Featuring a mix of classic, hand-built single track and modern, machine-built flow, Pincushion sets the tone for the weekend. Riders will take on a traditional XCO-style lap race that rewards strong pacing, technical precision, and smart race strategy.
Stage Two: Jackpot & Britton Peak – Lutsen to Tofte
Stage Two sends riders south along the shore to Lutsen Resort for a challenging point-to-point race. The High Climber Trail quickly stretches out the field before dropping into miles of fast, flowing singletrack that winds through the ancient Sawtooth Mountains.
This stage also introduces the race’s first enduro segments, giving riders the opportunity to gain or lose valuable time mid-race. A final lap around Britton Peak brings racers to the finish line high above Tofte, combining endurance, speed, and technical descending.
Stage Three: Split Rock Wilds – The Grand Finale
Stage Three concludes the weekend at the North Shore’s most notorious trail system: Split Rock Wilds. Opened in 2020, Split Rock is known for its modern technical design, exceptional rock work, and remote, backcountry feel unlike any other trail system in the region.
The longest and most technical stage of the race, Split Rock Wilds begins with a punchy, demanding climb before diving in to the best trail riding experience in the region. Bonus enduro segments highlight rugged terrain, and rewarding descents. A final decent back to Cove Point make for an unforgettable finale of the Sawtooth Stage Race.
