Ride Director Position Description

Reports to: Board of Directors

Term: Up to 3 years

Description: The Ride Director develops, plans, directs and facilitates mountain bike rides for the COGGS organization, including COGGS members and the general public. This position is equal parts ride director/facilitator/leader and event developer/planner/manager. 

COGGS Ride Director Position

Responsibilities:

  1. Envision and Develop Ride Calendar:

    • Organize and develop a year-round calendar of rides for COGGS.

    • Ensure rides are fun, safe, and focus on skills development.

  2. Liaison with Local Shops and Groups:

    • Share information on standing rides with local shops and groups.

  3. Partnership Development:

    • Partner with other organizations (e.g., Duluth Parks, Duluth Devo, YMCA) to develop rides for all rider types, including youth rides.

  4. Ride Leader Management:

    • Actively develop and manage a roster of ride leaders.

    • Ensure all ride leaders have the necessary training, resources, and communication skills to lead safe, fun rides.

  5. Ride Participation and Leadership:

    • Attend rides when possible.

    • Lead rides as necessary.

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Communicate with all relevant stakeholders for ride development, planning, permitting, and promotion, including:

    • Ride leaders

    • COGGS membership

    • General public

    • Other stakeholder organizations and user-groups

    • City of Duluth

  1. Collaboration on Ride Requirements:

    • Collaborate with the treasurer, insurance provider, and lawyer regarding ride requirements. 


Time involved: Candidate should be able to attend monthly board meetings and evening and/or weekend rides as scheduled. 


Desired Qualifications:

  1. Good MTB riding skills and general knowledge of mountain bike mechanics. 

  2. Previous experience leading rides for COGGS or similar outdoor group. 

  3. Group leader, extroverted social skills a plus.

  4. Good communication skills necessary.

  5. Excellent organizational skills and event planning experience.

  6. Comfort with public speaking in front of various groups.

  7. Ability to maintain your cool in stressful situations. 

  8. Basic computer skills (competence with MS Office and Google Docs).

  9. Certified Mountain Bike skills instructor (beneficial). 

  10. Understanding of the City of Duluth’s event permitting system (beneficial).
