Join the Board: COGGS Ride Director

The COGGS Board of Directors is looking to replace our indefatigable and talented Ride Director Dee Bartlam. Dee's term is up, and she is looking to pass this critical torch to someone new. We know you are out there. This position brings the fun, and keeps the organization true to its focus: riding bikes on trails. Group rides are fun, social, and inclusive. Doesn't hurt if you are a little bit of a cheerleader/camp counselor type. You should be organized, social, and like to rally the troops to ride bikes.

  • Term: 2 years, can serve up to 3 years

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Board of Directors

Term: Up to 3 years

Description: The Ride Director develops, plans, directs and facilitates mountain bike rides for the COGGS organization, including COGGS members and the general public. This position is equal parts ride director/facilitator/leader and event developer/planner/manager. 

 

The Ride Director will:

  1. Envision, organize and develop a calendar of rides for COGGS throughout the year. We ride year-round. Focus on fun, safety, and skills development. 

  2. Partner with other organizations to develop rides for all rider types (i.e. Duluth Devo or YMCA for youth rides).

  3. Actively develop and manage a roster of ride leaders. You can't lead all the rides yourself. Ensure that all ride leaders have the training, resources and communication skills needed to succeed and lead safe, fun rides.

  4. Attend rides as possible. Lead rides as necessary. 

  5. Communicate with all relevant stakeholders for ride development, planning, permitting and promotion, including:

    • Ride leaders

    • COGGS membership

    • General public

    • Other stakeholder organizations and user-groups

    • City of Duluth 

  6. Collaborate with treasurer, insurance provider and lawyer regarding ride requirements.

  7. Oversee COGGS Enduro Committee and help facilitate enduro series. 

Time involved: Candidate should be able to attend monthly board meetings and evening and/or weekend rides as scheduled. 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Good MTB riding skills and general knowledge of mountain bike mechanics. 

  2. Previous experience leading rides for COGGS or similar outdoor group. 

  3. Group leader, extroverted social skills a plus.

  4. Good communication skills necessary.

  5. Excellent organizational skills and event planning experience.

  6. Comfort with public speaking in front of various groups.

  7. Ability to maintain your cool in stressful situations. 

  8. Basic computer skills (competence with MS Office and Google Docs).

  9. Certified Mountain Bike skills instructor (beneficial). 

  10. Understanding of the City of Duluth’s event permitting system (beneficial).
